A Post a Day, Helps the Viewers to Stay
Ok, so I'm gonna try doing another one of these article things. This one is about social networking (I think that’s the term).
Having an online social life is very important to aspiring musicians. It’s a way to connect with fans and let them know what’s going on with your life. Luckily, the world we live in today makes that easy, unfortunately, this is something I’m not very good at. I can’t even remember the time I last posted on Facebook (even though it’s practically old news by now.) I’m very shy when it comes to posting. What if I say the wrong thing? What if what I thought was cool isn’t? What if everyone thinks I’m annoying and post too much? If there’s one thing I learned from watching others in charge of sites and pages is that none of those things really matter. People WANT to see what’s going on and can they will get bored if you don’t post frequently, which is exactly why I’m posting this now. Whether you think your content is good or not POST IT! Unless it is total garbage, (no one wants to see endless pictures of your big toe or something, use common sense.) But other than that you need to post, cause a post a day helps the viewers to stay.
Now that you know why it’s important to be social, let’s figure out how to do it. There is a short list after the break of what I've done and learned over the past few months,
1. Keep it short, unless it’s a blog post.
Facebook, Instagram, Google+, they’re all pretty much the same concept (though some are better than others). Your post will end up in a follower’s feed and you need to make sure that they look at what you say before scrolling down to find more interesting things, like cat videos. Keep it short, sweet, and add an eye-catching picture if you can. Whatever you can do to set yourself apart from the millions of others out there, do it. Though, if it’s a blog post it can be as long as you want, just keep it interesting.
2. Link EVERYWHERE!
If you go around to my different sites (Soundcloud, Google+, This Blog) you’ll notice that I link everything everywhere. For example, if you’re listening to my SoundCloud and you’re interested in more, you’re just a click away from my YouTube Channel. Same with all my other sites. I have links on the sidebar of this blog and tabs to the more important ones above. Even you don’t have something yet, like a Facebook Page, but you know you’re going to get one soon you can put a link that says coming soon. It lets people know that you’re still expanding and to check up on it every once in a while. And don’t forget to let people know that the links are there, they can be easy to miss sometimes.
3. Pictures
People love pictures! They’re eye-catching, more fun to look at than just words, and can even be used to tell a story. They let you connect with your audience more than words can. Wouldn’t you rather see a picture of an event or place rather than just read it’s description?
4. Keep it consistent.
Make a schedule for what you post and when you post it. For example, do a video a week, a Facebook/Instagram/twitter/blog post a day. Figure out what and when you’ll do it. An article every Tuesday or a recording update every second Friday. It’s up to you to find out what works for your audience. Pay attention to what they want. Remember, without an active audience you will not get very far. Don’t forget to let you viewers know when you will be posting. If they know what to expect then they will come!
That’s a wrap! I hope you enjoyed another article by Emily from Emily+Abigail! If you want to share your thoughts on the post or share what you’ve learned from social media sites feel free to hit it up in the comments!
